Antigua Guatemala City has an incredible number of ruins and restored colonial buildings, though these constitute are only a part of the city's original architectural splendour, they do give an idea of its former extravagance; Some buildings are dating from 1579; Antigua grew into a vast religious and cultural center that included schools, hospitals, music rooms, churches and monasteries.
